Wherefore art thou, Romeo?

“Two households, both alike in dignity/In fair Verona, where we lay out scene…” So goes the famous opening lines from William Shakespeare’s tragedy Romeo and Juliet, which this month will be reinterpreted as a ballet at Her Majesty’s Theatre. On Friday and Saturday evening, Shakespeare’s classic tale of two star-crossed lovers will be transformed into a 135-minute performance set to the music of Sergei Prokofiev and Pyotr Illyich Tchaikovsky, starring Emilia Bignami as Juliet, Joel Burke as Romeo and Ervin Zagidullin as Tybalt. Romeo and Juliet features alumni from world-famous production companies including the English National Ballet, The Australian Ballet and the Stuttgart Ballet.

One with nature

Discover more of the state through the National Parks and Wildlife Service South Australia’s Park of the Month scheme. This April, the initiative recognises the importance of “citizen science in parks” and people are being encouraged to get involved in citizen science in a variety of ways. Through their tireless volunteering, citizen scientists assist researchers in shaping our understanding of the local environment. For example, they may help by recording frog noises or taking photos of rare species. Children can also take part through the Bush Buddies program, with activities such as fungi spotting walks and nature bingo.

Word search

After sell-out seasons in Adelaide, Sydney and Melbourne, the highest and fastest-selling show in the history of the Dunstan Playhouse returns to Adelaide as part of a wider national tour throughout 2025. Adapted by South Australian playwright Verity Laughton from Pip Williams’ acclaimed bestseller, The Dictionary of Lost Words tells the story of Esme, a young girl who takes it upon herself to preserve the ‘women’s words’ being neglected by the male lexicographers creating the first Oxford Dictionary. As the years pass and Esme’s world expands and her circle of friends grows – actresses, suffragettes, market traders, workers – she realises the power in gathering their voices, and lending hers. And on the way, she comes to understand the many meanings of the word “love”. The Dictionary of Lost Words will be shown at Dunstan Playhouse until April 17.
