Ooh la la!

Grab your beret and a baguette for the 36th Alliance Française French Film Festival as it returns to Adelaide screens until April 23. This year’s festival kicked off with the Australian premiere of Medhi Idir and Grand Corps Malade’s Monsieur Aznavour on Wednesday, retelling the rise to fame of 20th century French-Armenian crooner Charles Aznavour, who is depicted by Golden Globe-nominated actor Tahar Rahim. In another highlight, Matthieu Delaporte and Alexandre de La Patelliere’s The Court of Monte Cristo (Le Comte de Monte-Cristo) will make its Australian premiere on March 28. The AF French Film Festival will also include regional screenings in Renmark, Victor Harbor and Mount Gambier.

This weekend, head to Port MacDonnell for the revived Bay Festival or catch a show at the 2025 Adelaide Fringe.

Adelaide Fringe wraps up

It’s not too late to catch a show at the 2025 Adelaide Fringe, which wraps up this Sunday. With 1300 shows at 500 venues this year, it is little wonder that the Fringe is the biggest arts festival in the southern hemisphere. The Fringe brings some of the best performers from around the globe to South Australia, with shows ranging from cabaret to circus, dance, film, interactive experiences, variety, comedy, magic, theatre, visual arts and more.

It’s all Greek to me

Travel to Athens’ historic port city, Piraeus, for Echoes of Piraeus: A Voyage into Greek Urban Music. Known as “the gateway to Europe”, the important port city has been a major hub for maritime trade and passenger travel since the 5th century BCE. Across two hours and 45 minutes, listen to the unique sound of the bouzouki, the davul drum and the ancient lyre. This performance pays homage to the legendary Greek musicians Markos Vamvarkaris, Yiannis Papaioannou and Yiorgos Mitsakis and takes place at Dunstan Playhouse this Saturday at 8pm.

Journey to West Africa

Journey to the streets of Guinea this weekend for Cirque Kalabante’s high-energy spectacle, Afrique en Cirque. The elite circus performers will have you on the edge of your seat with their gravity-defying acrobatics, mind-bending contortion, side-splitting comedy and graceful dancing, accompanied by a toe-tapping Afro-jazz band and the mesmerising sound of the stringed kora. During the 60-minute performance, audiences will be transported to a traditional Guinean fishing village, where they will experience the sights, sounds and smells of West African life. Afrique en Cirque has four performances remaining at Gluttony’s The Flamingo and ends on Sunday, March 23.

One for the foodies

Sample some of KI’s best food and wine at Gutsy Kangaroo Island. Taking place over the June long weekend, this event has been aptly described as “Kangaroo Island’s bold, brave and gritty celebration of wine, spirits, beer, cider and food culture built on guts and determination”. Among the highlights, you can enjoy a refreshing dip in the Kingscote Tidal Pool at sunrise, listen to live acoustic music in an oyster shed or take part in the annual burning of Springs Road Cellar Door’s wine barrel. Gutsy Kangaroo Island takes place from Friday, June 6 until Sunday, June 8.
