AFL and ANZ Community Ball

Mar 13, 2025, updated Mar 13, 2025

This weekend, celebrate the 21st birthday of international superstar Hans at Gluttony’s The Flamingo or join South Australia’s Indian community for Holi 2025.

Footy’s back

The 2025 AFL season returns this month, with both Adelaide and Port Adelaide hoping to make a charge towards finals come September. Round 1 at Adelaide Oval sees the Crows take on St Kilda on Sunday, March 16. The Power’s first home game comes the following weekend, on Saturday, March 22, when they come up against last year’s wooden spooners, Richmond. Then, from April 10 to 13, all 18 AFL teams will arrive in South Australia for the much-anticipated 2025 Gather Round. Both South Australian teams will be hoping for improvement this year, with the Power bowing out in yet another preliminary final, while the Crows will be looking to make their first finals campaign since 2017.

A glamorous evening with Hans

International cabaret sensation Hans is turning 21, and you’re invited to the celebration of the decade. After decades of global fame, the Berlin-born star is finally revealing (almost) all in this highly anticipated coming-of-age cabaret show, Hans: Young, Fun & 21. The international superstar will open up to audiences in an unforgettable birthday party celebration joined by his dynamic live band, The Ungrateful Bastards, and fabulous dancer, The Lucky Bitches. This show will be on until March 23 at Gluttony’s The Flamingo, with only five shows remaining.

A night to remember

March 14 will be a night not to miss when the 2025 ANZ Community Ball takes over the William Magarey Room at Adelaide Oval. More than 500 guests are expected to attend this special evening, which raises vital funds for 12 South Australian charities, including Cure4CF, Guide Dogs SA/NT, KickStart for Kids, the Women’s & Children’s Hospital Foundation and Zoos SA. Grab a drink at the cocktail bar before you hit the dancefloor with a performance by local part band The Cast, or be amazed by magician and mentalist Matt Tarrant. There’ll be a range of prizes and fundraising opportunities throughout the evening, with a major car raffle, live auction, wine wall and silent auction. Since its inception in 2019, the ANZ Community Ball has raised more than $1.5 million for local charities.

I love rock ‘n’ roll

Step into the world of Hedwig, a genderfluid punk singer from her life story of lost love and betrayal. Based on a book by John Cameron Mitchell, Hedwig and the Angry Inch follows the eccentric emigre as she tours the United States with her rowdy rock band. The Broadway musical explores themes such as transformation and self-expression and combines glamour with sardonic humour and rock ‘n’ roll music. This Australian premiere stars breakout performer Seann Mile Moore in the title role, and Adam Noviello as Hedwig’s devoted, yet defiant lover Yitzhak. This show takes place in the historic Queens Theatre, with the last performance on Saturday.

Colour everywhere

Join South Australia’s Indian community for this year’s Holi festival. The Hindu festival of colour celebrates the triumph of good over evil, as well as the transition from winter to spring in southeast Asia. A highlight of Holi is when the vibrant gulal powder is thrown, creating a rainbow of colour. This Saturday, the Indian Australian Arts and Cultural Association Incorporated will hold its Holi on the Beach event at Semaphore, where there will be music and dancer performances, delicious food, and of course, stunning colours.

Celebrating emerging creatives

Discover South Australia’s up-and-coming visual art talent at the 2025 Helpmann Academy Graduate Exhibition. Eighteen emerging visual artists will showcase their works in disciplines ranging from ceramics to glass, moving image, painting, photography, sculpture and textiles. Among the creations is a hand-coloured galah on lino print and an intricate fence made from paper pulp. This exhibition highlights standout graduates from Flinders University and the University of South Australia and takes place at UniSA’s SASA Gallery until March 22

A garden party

With Mad March upon us, why not take advantage of a free performance at the Garden of Unearthly Delight’s RAA Garden Party. Across 60 minutes, audiences of all ages can enjoy comedy, magic, circus, cabaret and music. This performance takes place every Sunday at 2.30pm throughout the 2025 Adelaide Fringe season. Body moving

In a highlight of the 2025 Adelaide Festival program, the late German dancer and choreographer Pina Bausch’s influential 20th-century contemporary dance piece, Cafe Muller, will make its Australian premiere alongside two avant-garde routines by French experimental dancer Boriz Charmatz in Club Amour. Set to the arias of Henry Purcell, Cafe Muller follows the protagonist as she interacts with the ghosts of a crowded cafe’s patrons after it has closed for the day. Meanwhile, Boris’ two avant-garde pieces, Aat enen tionon and heres, duo, blur the boundary between performers and the audience. A warning that this element of the show contains nudity. These dance pieces will be performed until Sunday, March 16.

Art with heart

Meanwhile, Simon will showcase his sculptures made from found objects, including rusting machinery, weathered rock formations and gnarled old trees. This exhibition will be shown from Friday, March 21 until Saturday, April 12.
