Poem: Grandparents

Grandparents

I.

Growing up
I always knew you would be there
never doubted you’d be in the front row
watching me dance
I never imagined a day where you wouldn’t be
the one applauding me
or picking me up when I fell
I would do anything to hear your laugh once more
or to hear you say you love me
even on darkest days

growing up
we don’t realise what little time we have
with the ones we love most
until we’re holding their hand in a hospital
saying our final goodbyes
wishing they could see us dance
just one more time.

II.

But as inconsistent as spring’s wild weather
I roar with thunder
pour out rain that suddenly
stillness takes over

and gathering myself with what remains
with the last bit of sun
that shines to make me see
it was just a scattered day

and that like spring
and an ode to an ocean in my heart,
you both have sprung again.
