Do you have ambitions to be an arts reviewer but don’t know where to begin? This 10-week mentorship opportunity, a partnership between Helpmann Academy and InReview, will set you on your way.

The program, which is now in its fourth year, connects experienced arts writers with emerging voices and seeks to rebuild the practice of robust discourse and analysis of South Australian performing and visual arts.

Four emerging writers – Michelle Wakim (2021), Gianluca Noble (2022), Shannon Pearce (2023) and Nicky Tsz Tung Li (2023) – have previously completed the Helpmann Academy InReview Mentorship program and are now freelance contributors to InReview, a unique non-profit arts journalism project designed to nurture professional arts reviewing.

The successful mentee in this round will be matched with an InReview mentor or mentors, who will be assigned based on the interests and background of the mentee. The mentor(s) will work with them in all aspects of writing reviews, as well as providing career advice. The mentorship will be conducted over eight hours per week for 10 weeks.

“At the beginning of the mentorship, I was hesitant,” says Nicky Tsz Tung Li, the most recent mentee. “Most of my past professional development opportunities were offered by organisations that specialise in working with culturally and linguistically diverse artists; and most of my mentors were women of colour. I was afraid my perspectives would not be understood… those doubts quickly vanished when I published my first review with InReview. Both [mentor] Samela Harris and [arts editor] Suzie Keen were kind and supportive.”

Musician and writer Shannon Pearce, who completed her mentorship in the first half of 2023, said: “The experience working with industry professionals and esteemed writers Samela Harris and Graham Strahle was invaluable and has undoubtedly kickstarted my writing, reviewing and media career.”
