“On behalf of the Writers SA Board, I heartily welcome this wonderful woman back to the world of writing,” chair of the Writers SA board Tanya Wilkins said, announcing the appointment this week.
“I look forward to working closely with Laura as she brings her big vision to the organisation. I won’t give any spoilers, but we have exciting times ahead.
“Laura is well read, has great networks, and is highly regarded. Writers SA members and the wider literary community will benefit from all of these as she looks to continue supporting writing craft and building the profile of writers across South Australia and beyond.”
Kroetsch, a well-known figure in the South Australian arts and literary scene, led Adelaide Writers’ Week from 2011-2018. She is also a former curator of the OzAsia Festival’s writing and ideas program In Other Words and Dark Mofo’s Dark and Dangerous Thoughts, and worked for the History Trust of South Australia managing the Bay to Birdwood.
After being diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of cancer early last year, Kroetsch underwent surgery to remove her thyroid, a large part of her trachea and her larynx (voice box). In the months that followed she faced further treatment, with her friends launching a fundraising campaign to support her lengthy period of rehabilitation and recovery while also noting that, “no doubt, Laura’s contribution to the landscape of writing and ideas wil continue”.

In a Writers SA media release, Kroetsch says she will bring “experience, passion, commitment and lots of knowledge” to her new role with the organisation.
“I bring a lifetime of listening, problem-solving, tea making (and wine pouring) and care. I am a thoughtful reader who has made a career supporting writing and writers and readers.
“What I hope to bring is a connection between writers and readers and to help encourage more writing and reading.”
Kroetsch will begin work with the organisation on February 21, and replaces outgoing CEO Jessica Alice.
Writers SA, which describes itself as the “premier organisation for writers and writing in the state”, announced earlier this month that it plans to launch a new national literary journal this year in partnership with South Australia’s three universities. It presents a year-round program of workshops, courses and other events for writers, as well as offering services such as manuscript assessment and a mentorship program.
