Alana Potgieter takes inspiration from the breaking of the ‘grey civic dawn’ in this week’s Poet’s Corner contribution.
The clanging alarm intrusion
always starts off the confusion:
the blundering mole ferreting
bleary-eyed readying
hasty preparations to leave home
under the cold clear stars
that salt the pre-dawn dome
So breaks the grey civic dawn
on asphalt rivers that guide
the red and silver light streams of the public as they swarm
to work, to school, the daily rule.
Slowly the colours are released one by one
as the blue pinking light emerges from the monochrome
Under a bank of steely dark cloud
at last breaks forth this feast:
shafts burning burnished gold across the rose beneath
the sun gloriously yolks over the horizon in the east.
Living in South Australia, Alana Potgieter is a veterinarian from South Africa who takes immense joy and inspiration from the natural world and feels a deep connection to it. She is most often to be found in the garden that she and her husband have created from the soil up, or reading a book with one of her spoilt kitties on her lap.
