SALIFE gets to know MIX 102.3 workday announcer Michelle Murphy whose radio career kicked off after she moved to London with little more than “a backpack and hope”.
Describe the best day of your life.
That day would be six weeks after I landed in London. After working mostly in Adelaide for the first 10 years of my career I took a chance on radio, and life, and moved to London with not much more than a backpack and hope. When I was offered a job at Heart London (radio station) it was the beginning: the beginning of new friendships, a new appreciation of my family and everything I had left at home. It was the start of incredible work moments and learnings, and so much travel.
What brings you joy in life?
A few things … finding a treasure in an op shop. A quiet night near a campfire under the stars, having a pint in a London pub, a barbecue at home with family, getting lost in a great book. Music. There’s so much.
What’s the best advice you’ve been given?
Do what makes you happy. I love the quote: “Whatever you’re not changing, you’re choosing”.
What is your most treasured photograph you have and why?
This is me with my friend Sally at the top of the Eiffel Tower. Sally passed away a few years ago, and I love the pure joy on our faces in this moment together
Describe the best meal you’ve ever eaten.
It was the food and the location! A seafood risotto enjoyed while sitting out front of a restaurant in Riomaggiore, one of the towns of Cinque Terre in Italy. A guy rowed his tinny to the shore in front of us, got out and walked straight into the kitchen with a bucket of fish. The freshest delivery I’ve ever witnessed.
What are the best qualities of your favourite person?
She’s patient, understanding, has a great sense of humour, is generous and lives a great example of someone making the most of the one life we’re given – my mum.
What are the best five songs on your Spotify playlist?
Long Hot Summer – Keith Urban
Unpretty – TLC
If You’re Gone – Matchbox Twenty
Only You – Yazoo
Days Like This – Van Morrison
What was your best purchase?
My little home. I’m so proud of it and will gladly show off to any visitors all my other favourite purchases – I love thrifting!
