Thinking back 17 years to when they purchased 28 Ramsgate Steet, Glenelg South, Craig says he and his wife Becc were drawn to the home’s historic architecture and its location.

“It’s just so convenient to access the cafe and restaurant precinct on the Broadway, Jetty Road, and surrounding areas – Glenelg South is turning into a real little hub,” says Craig.

“The beach is so accessible; we’re always walking along the beach and enjoying the beautiful coastline.”

The five-bedroom, two-bathroom home, on an allotment of 637 square metres, features a master suite with a spacious walk-in wardrobe and ensuite.

The fully-renovated property also includes a home theatre featuring an Italian crystal chandelier, a home study, an open-plan living, dining and kitchen area, and a sommelier-worthy cellar.

But it wasn’t always so.

Craig and Becc carried out an extensive renovation to the property, enlisting Steve Taylor from Melbourne-based COS Design to design an award-winning renovation, which was completed in 2018.

Craig says a priority was to create a functional floorplan, with a seamless transition between old and new, as well as between the indoor and outdoor spaces.

To achieve this, they maintained a three-metre ceiling height throughout the property, bringing in abundant natural light to the outdoor extension.

This aspect of the renovation was recognised with the HIA Outdoor Project of the Year award in 2018.

“You may start on the pool deck, then you jump in the pool, then you might have a spa and right adjacent to the spa is this beautiful, bespoke concrete shower that we built – it just flows and works so well,” says Craig.

Craig says it was important to preserve the bungalow’s character features, including its ornate ceilings, original fireplaces, Baltic pine floorboards and wood-panelled hallways.

“I think one of Adelaide’s strengths is its old-style bungalows, and I really love blending and retaining that century-old history with modern architecture,” says Craig.

For interiors, Craig and Becc opted for a monochrome colour scheme, with charcoal polished concrete floors, white and wooden cabinetry and Dekton Entzo benchtops.

Craig says it was important to choose top-quality fixtures and fittings, including V-ZUG appliances, and a Liebherr integrated fridge and dishwasher in the kitchen.

There is also heated flooring throughout the home, as well as air conditioning and gas fireplaces.

“We wanted the quality to be the same no matter where you were in the house,” says Craig.

Commercial-grade black sliding doors lead to the award-winning outdoor entertaining area, with its built-in Beefeater Barbecue, Dekton Entzo benchtop and Velux skylights.

Outdoors, you will also find the heated spa and swimming pool, while an outdoor custom-built concrete shower includes LED lights.

Craig says he enjoys the Bay Laurel hedging in the garden, as well as a prominent Japanese Maple tree.

When asked about his favourite part of the house, Craig says he loves its character charm, the modern extension and the heated pool.

“I just love looking outside into the front garden when I’m working from home in the front study, which has such character with the ornate ceilings, the fireplace and the floorboards,” says Craig.

“I love the extension because it’s open, it’s laid out well, it has high-quality fixtures, and I love the way that the back part of the home integrates with the outdoor entertaining area.”

After 17 years, Craig, Becc and their family are now moving on to new adventures.

“I’ll miss the seamless integration between the old and the new. I’ll miss the location and I’ll miss the high level of functionality that the home provides,” says Craig.

“I’ll also miss the outdoor area, particularly at this time of year. It’s such a functional and usable outdoor space, particularly the pool and the spa.”

The sale of 28 Ramsgate Street, Glenelg South is being handled by David Ferrari and Carter Persinos of Belle Property.
