The March issue of SALIFE magazine celebrates International Women’s Day with special interviews featuring inspiring South Australian women. These women include Dr Catherine Grace, who is a director at the SA Space Industry Centre. She discusses her motivations, life lessons and advice she has for other women.
Tell us about the first steps you made in your career. How did you break into your industry? My first step into space was all about saying yes to opportunities and yes to those who believed in my capability, even when I had self-doubt. When I was studying human biology and archaeological science, I never imagined it would lead to a career in space. But transferable skills, commitment to continuing education, and envisioning the bigger picture means that I now have the privilege of supporting the space ecosystem. My two pieces of advice are: education opens doors and always back yourself. Within Australia, only 37 per cent of university STEM enrolments are from women, and women represent only 15 per cent of all people working in STEM jobs. There are systemic barriers to address, but together we can support one another to pursue careers in any role we can imagine. Lastly, surround yourself with women who speak great things about you when you are not in the room, and be that woman in turn. |
What motivates you professionally? My motivation comes from being part of something bigger than myself. Contributing to a better world, where we bring the benefits of space, of science, of human ingenuity back down to make planet earth a better place. Space technology isn’t just about what is up there. |
What does IWD mean to you? IWD means coming together, it means remembering and honouring where the movement for women’s rights has started, and it means bringing focus to the issues of inequity facing all humans today. It is an opportunity for dialogue and action. An opportunity to inspire and be inspired. It is a way to keep the embers of social justice burning strongly and celebrating the incredible achievements of women across the globe. |
How do we encourage women in leadership? I am not an expert in gender equity, but I am a strong advocate for breaking gender norms and systemic barriers. In my eyes it is not about encouragement for women to be leaders, but rather about ensuring that women are truly supported and enabled to be leaders. |
How do you like to spend downtime away from work? South Australia is an incredible place, and it’s such a privilege to live here. You can find me enjoying everything that SA has to offer: enjoying time in our waters at the beautiful SA beaches, taking a bush walk, or looking at the expansive skies in the Flinders Ranges; you can find me volunteering; or find me in my revegetation/rewilding project planting native flora to support nature corridors; you can find me enjoying the Adelaide Festival Centre or the delightful foods in SA’s incredible cafes or restaurants.
