Benn Welford was born and raised in Whyalla before moving to Sydney to study acting at NIDA. Here, the 38-year-old entertainer says he’s thrilled to be back home and working with State Theatre Company South Australia for the first time, starring in their latest production Housework.
Give us a brief insight into what you do.
I’m an actor, fitness coach, trivia host, DJ, and new father—balancing life on stage, in the fitness studio, behind the turntables, and at the change table. Over the years, I’ve been fortunate enough to perform around the world, including in Disney’s The Lion King on London’s West End. My latest project is the world premiere of Housework for the State Theatre Company South Australia, a bold new black comedy exploring sex scandals, betrayals, culture wars, the price of power, motherhood and Machiavellian manipulation. As a proud South Australian, I’m thrilled to be performing with the State Theatre Company for the first time.
What brings you joy in life?
Entertaining others has always been my greatest joy—whether through acting, hosting, or DJing. These days, though, the biggest joy comes from my daughter’s smile.
What is your most treasured photograph and why?
A photo of my daughter that’s currently my phone’s lock screen. Every time I see it, I’m filled with love and gratitude.
What is the hardest lesson you’ve had to learn?
That life doesn’t always go as planned, and that’s okay. I’ve learned to embrace uncertainty, let go of perfectionism and trust that unexpected turns often lead to the most rewarding outcomes.
