South Australian seniors are being warned about a scam website attempting to charge a fee in exchange for a Seniors Card.
Minister for Seniors and Ageing Well Nat Cook has reaffirmed that SA Seniors Cards are always free of charge and that applicants are never asked to pay a fee or disclose financial details – warning the public not to go to the scam site “www.theseniorsassistant.com”.
The illegal website claims to specialise in “providing assistance and consultation services for several senior-related applications and processes such as the Seniors Card”.
“Let me be crystal clear: applying for a Seniors Card is completely free. If someone is asking for payment, it’s a scam,” Cook said.
“If you encounter a site asking for payment, report it immediately. It’s not just wrong, it’s illegal.”
The Minister said South Australians looking to obtain a Seniors Card should use the official government website, www.seniorscard.sa.gov.au.
She said that before applying for membership, applicants should look for the South Australian government and Seniors Card logos on the website to make sure it is legitimate.
She added that anyone who has made a payment to the illegal website should contact their bank immediately and make a report to the federal government’s national anti-scam centre at www.scamwatch.gov.au.
