Officers were called to reports of a mental health incident involving a man hurting himself with a knife at Craigburn Farm just after midnight on Tuesday, police said.

SA Police allege the 40-year-old man turned the weapon on officers as they entered the home to check on him.

Police said they used a taser “unsuccessfully” and the man allegedly continued to threaten officers with the knife.

“Police then discharged their firearms, incapacitating the man,” police said in a statement.

“Paramedics worked on the occupant before he was transported to hospital where he sadly died.”

No police were injured during the incident.

Detectives from the major crimes squad, specialists from the forensic response section and the force’s internal investigation team are probing what happened.

Police Commissioner Grant Stevens will hold a press conference on the incident at 10am.
