Emergency services were called to Riddoch Highway, five kilometres south of Nagwarry, at 2:40 pm on Sunday after reports of a three-car crash.

A five-year-old boy who was a passenger in the middle of the three cars died at the scene, and a 15-year-old girl in the same car was taken to hospital with critical injuries. She died in hospital on Monday night.

The crash was sparked after a Holden sedan hit an emu, causing the Toyota station wagon carrying the two children to brake. A Nissan ute crashed into the rear of the Toyota.

A 42-year-old male who was driving the Toyota was taken to hospital with minor injuries, alongside a 46-year-old woman, a 13-year-old girl and a six-year-old boy, all from Mount Gambier.

The Nissan driver, a 22-year-old Worrolong man, was taken to hospital uninjured as a precaution, while the woman driving the Holden sedan was uninjured.

The girl’s death brings the state’s road toll to 72.
