A five-year-old boy has died in a three-car collision in the state’s south east sparked when one vehicle hit an emu on a highway.
Emergency services were called to Riddoch Highway, five kilometres south of Nagwarry, at 2:40 pm on Sunday after reports of a three-car crash.
A Holden sedan hit an emu, causing a Toyota station wagon to brake to avoid the collision. A Nissan ute then crashed into the rear of the Toyota.
A five-year-old boy in the Toyota died at the scene, with a 15-year-old girl in the same vehicle taken to hospital with critical injuries.
The 42-year-old male Toyota driver was taken to hospital with minor injuries, along with a 46-year-old woman, a 13-year-old girl and six-year-old boy.
All Toyota occupants were from Mount Gambier.
The Nissan driver, a 22-year-old Worrolong man, was taken to hospital uninjured as a precaution, while the woman driving the Holden sedan was uninjured.
Major Crash officers attended the scene and roads were closed, but have since reopened.
Emergency services were later called to Port Augusta West on the Eyre Highway at 8:40 pm on Sunday after reports of a crash involving a truck and a car.
A 24-year-old Port Augusta man who was driving the car was taken to hospital with serious injuries.
A 29-year-old Clearview man, who had been driving the truck, was taken to hospital with minor injuries.
Major Crash officers attended the scene, and roads remain closed.
