Adelaide is set to host some of the world’s best athletes across several sports in the coming days with cycling, women’s cricket, baseball and sailing events this week and athletics next week.
The Tissot UCI Track Nations Cup, Women’s Cricket CommBank ODI Series, ABL Championship Series, and ILCA World Championships are all taking place in the coming week.
SportSA CEO Leah Cassidy urged South Australians to attend the events, some of which are qualifying events for the upcoming Paris 2024 Olympics.
“These are world-class athletes, you are getting to see them in your own backyard and you don’t want to miss that opportunity. They don’t come around that often,” Cassidy said.
“I highly encourage you to get out and take your kids and view these spectacular events. These are our potential Olympic athletes who will be in action in Paris in a couple of months and you can see them right here… in Adelaide.”
The 2024 Tissot UCI Track Nations Cup, a final qualifier for the Paris Olympics, will be hosted at the Adelaide Super-Drome from February 2-4.
One of three Tissot UCI Track Nations Cups annually, the competition will see the best track cyclists from around the globe competing in Adelaide.
AusCycling CEO Marne Fechner said she hoped the home-track advantage would give Australian riders a confidence boost.
“With the Olympic Games taking place just months after this event, the athletes and teams will be approaching the pinnacle of their performance, and I expect we can look forward to seeing incredibly high-end competition,” Fechner said.
Tickets are available for the event, ranging from $15-$50.
The Australian Women’s Cricket Team is set to take on South Africa at Adelaide Oval as part of the Women’s CommBank ODI Series on February 3.
After South Africa beat Australia for the first time in women’s internationals in the second T201 over the weekend, Australia will be in a fight to take back the lead.
On Sunday, South Africa beat the Australian team by six wickets, with South African player Laura Wolvaardt saying after the game that the win had given the team new confidence.
“Just knowing in the back of our minds that we have beaten them and can beat them (is important),” Wolvaardt said.
Tickets are still available, ranging from $5-$20.
The Adelaide Giants are hosting game two of the ABL Championship Series on the weekend, after beating the Melbourne Aces to secure a spot in the grand final.
The Giants will be facing Perth Heat on February 2 in Perth, before returning to Adelaide for the February 3 game at West Beach.
If needed, Adelaide will also be hosting the third game of the best-of-three championship on Sunday, February 4.
Tickets go on sale at 5pm tonight, January 29, with prices ranging from $25-$40.
As InDaily reported recently, a series of world sailing championships are currently underway in Adelaide.
The ILCA 7 World Championship, an Olympic qualifier event, will wrap up on January 31, with the 7 Masters World Championship then set to run between February 2-10.
Hosted at the Adelaide Sailing Club, the club’s Commodore Peter Royle said the events have brought the “best of the best” in the sailing world to Adelaide.
“This is not your average national championship,” Royle told InDaily.
The ILCA 7 World Championship and the 7 Masters World Championship are both free to watch at Adelaide Sailing Club in West Beach.
The packed sporting weekend ahead is followed up next week when the Adelaide Invitational brings Australia’s best track and field athletes to compete at the SA Athletics Stadium in Mile End on February 10.
Athletes will be competing in the first national series event of the year to compete for World Athletics ranking points in another Olympic qualifier event.
Tickets to the event are still available for $20.
