Stirling-based Duxton Pubs has acquired The Birkenhead Tavern in Port Adelaide, bringing the number of South Australian venues under the company’s ownership to 23.
Established in 1878, The Birkenhead Tavern has a longstanding reputation for catering to Port Adelaide patrons with family-friendly drinks, food and fun.
It’s now owned by Duxton Pubs, a South Australian and hospitality player which also owns The Saracens Head Hotel in the city, the Cremorne Hotel in Unley and more.
“We saw it as a natural fit for us to expand our venues in metro Adelaide, and we didn’t have a venue out in Port Adelaide, so it was a really nice fit for us,” Duxton Pubs CEO Mark Condi told InDaily.
Condi said Duxton Pubs would honour the iconic venue’s legacy and charm while finding ways to make it even more profitable.
“We really want to keep the status quo,” Condi said.

Duxton Pubs said it recognised the importance of maintaining the venue’s historical iconography, and was eager to learn from the business’s existing staff about what makes The Birkenhead so lucrative.
“It’s a cracker little pub. It’s always full, so as a business we feel we can learn a lot from it as well,” said Duxton Pubs general marketing manager Alice Glanville.
“A lot of the staff that have come across with us have been around anywhere from 11 to 20 years, so that’s really exciting.”
In a statement, Condi said the company’s priority was “to ensure all the Birkenhead employees are supported through the transition, they are an amazing team. We look forward to a continued focus on the venue and are excited about the future”.
Duxton Pubs now own 23 South Australian pubs.
