Let’s Bora: Brazilian-inspired cafe opens in beachside suburb

Bora has opened on Jetty Street, bringing breakfast and lunch classics with a Brazilian twist to Grange.

It’s a Friday when we visit neighbourhood café Bora, just two days after softly opening its doors to the public. Although there’s been little social media coverage about the opening, the space is packed at 8.30am.

“We were not going to open this week but the neighbourhood and the community have been asking us ‘when are you open? We need our daily fix in the morning’,” Bora owner, David William, says as we sit on tables outside between customers sipping coffees and eating pastries.

Located in the former Cooks Pantry spot on Jetty Street, just a short walk from the Grange Jetty, David says the community “means a lot” to Bora.

“Since I got the place here in November, they have always been so supportive. They always come in to say hello. We are here pretty much 24/7 trying to make things happen. They are always knocking on the door saying hello, trying to look inside,” David says.

“They’ve been very supportive, and it means a lot. It makes me think I’m on the right path and right track.

“I was a local in Grange. I lived in Grange for three years and I love the location. I always kept an eye on this place, to be honest. I used to live around the corner.

“Then when I saw the place was available, I was like ‘let’s try it’. I didn’t come after this place, this place came after me.”

The BELT

The menu has a range of breakfast and lunch dishes with a Brazilian twist, like breakfast tacos and coriander-infused scrambled eggs. There’s also a list of brunch classics like smashed avo and eggs on toast.

“It’s been very successful – we call it BELT. It’s the Bora version of BLT, which is bacon, eggs, lettuce and tomato with Dijon and pecorino,” David says as a customer eavesdropping interrupts our conversation to tell us she’s suddenly hungry.

“Since we opened, it’s been the best-selling.

“I believe people are going to love the Bora pork Benny, which is like an eight-hour slow-cooked pork with a Tabasco Hollandaise sauce.”

There will also be a list of traditional Brazilian dishes – some on the permanent menu but mostly highlighted through interchangeable specials. These will range from coxinha, which is similar to a chicken croquette, cheese bread and more.

“Another Brazilian dish that we’re going to have is an acai bowl in a Brazilian way. I know we do have acai bowls [across the road at Acaico Acai Bar Adelaide], but I can assure you that it’s going to be totally different to what they’re doing there,” David says.

When asked what the difference is between regular acai and the traditional Brazilian version, David laughs and replies: “I guess they’re all the same, but the Brazilian one is made by Brazilians.”

“Acai is originally from Brazil…it’s [mostly] imported here from Brazil,” David says.

“It’s [mostly] from the northeast of Brazil. It’s very yummy. I love it. The times that I go to Brazil, I put at least five kilos on eating acai.

“The one that we’re going to be making here reminds me of home. Many places that I go here [in Adelaide], I don’t like having a acai because I know it’s not going to be the same.”

Bora also hopes to offer a nighttime trade in the coming weeks.

The café has been flipped from how it originally looked under The Cooks Pantry. David has gone for light neutrals with orange – to match the Bora logo – adding a touch of colour throughout.

“We tried to make it like beach-ey vibes, but a little bit more modern than before,” David says.

“I’m pretty happy with the results that we are having at the moment and feedback from the community has been really good as well.”
