Tin Shed co-founders (L–R) Ian Schmidt and Vic Orlow's new spot features a barrel room, tastings, live music and smokehouse BBQ dining.

Tin Shed Distilling Co has opened a distillery door in Nairne serving up live music, smokehouse BBQ and plenty of whisky, rum and gin.

The new venue from Tin Shed Distilling was once the freezer of Chapman’s Bacon Factory at Old Princes Highway, a site dating back to 1899.

Co-founders Ian and Vic say the project was “a long time coming” since plans for developing the site began in 2022.

The team behind Tin Shed Distilling were eager to make the site not just a cellar door, but a dedicated live music venue for the Hills area.

The venue will host four live gigs weekly, with performances every Friday through Sunday.

Venue manager Jaime Fraser says live music was always one of the core passions of Tin Shed Distilling, along with BBQ and artisanal spirits.

“While the region’s current live music landscape often features cover performances in picturesque settings, we recognised an untapped potential for original artistic expression,” he says.

“One of our goals is to provide a professional platform that celebrates and amplifies local musical talent.”

After missing out on a federal grant to support live music in the venue last year, the distillery team raised $16,145 through a crowdfunding campaign which went towards a stage, lighting, speakers, mics and stands, lighting and other features to facilitate live music.

The campaign said their state-of-the-art PA system and stage will empower local artists, foster emerging talent, enhance community life and boost local tourism.

“By crowdfunding a state-of-the-art professional audio system, we have created a venue to showcase emerging artists within a high-quality production environment,” Jaime says.

“This initiative represents more than entertainment—it’s a commitment to nurturing creative talent, supporting local musicians, and enriching our community’s cultural landscape.

“Our products are handcrafted and original, it’s only fitting that our venue offers artists a stage where their original compositions can be heard.”

While taking in a gig, there are plenty of locally produced beers, wines and ciders to sip along with a cocktail menu and tasting flights of Tin Shed Distilling Co whisky, rum, vodka or gin which are distilled and aged onsite.

There’s a retail space on site to purchase a bottle and expansive outdoor dining complete with fire pits.

A Yoder Smokers pellet smoker and Parilla wood grill are also on deck, so patrons can watch head chef Anthony Albricethe cook the smokehouse BBQ menu.

“In line with our commitment to supporting local, we have partnered with Nairne-based Pfitzner Meats and Butchery to offer the finest selection of South Australian-sourced products,” Ian said.

“We’re creating an immersive experience that brings together our award-winning whisky and premium spirits, authentic smokehouse BBQ and live music from some of South Australia’s leading artists.”

Front-of-house is taken care of by Jaime Fraser – the former NOLA manager – and Roman Tazhdynov, a previous owner of Biblotheca, with a crew of local staff.

The distillery is open Wednesdays and Thursdays from 11am ‘til 6pm, Fridays and Saturdays from 11am ‘til 10pm and Sundays from 11am ‘til 9pm.

Guided tours and tastings in the barrel room will be available, with more information available via their website and Instagram.
