Alexandre Dumas’ epic adventure The Count of Monte Cristo has received its first French cinematic treatment in over fifty years, with Pierre Niney leading a stellar cast.
The film is showing at Palace Nova Eastend and Palace Nova Prospect as part of the Alliance Française French Film Festival 2025, with screenings beginning Friday, March 28.
Set in Marseille in 1815, the film follows the principled young sailor Edmond Dantès (played by Niney), who is about to become captain of his ship. He is looking forward to marrying his love, Mercédès (Anaïs Demoustier), but is betrayed by jealous rivals. Dantès is falsely accused of being part of a pro-Napoleon conspiracy and imprisoned without trial.
After years in isolation, Dantès befriends Abbé Faria (Pierfrancesco Favino), an inmate in the next cell, who tells him about a hidden treasure on the island of Monte Cristo. Dantès then sets in motion an extraordinary plan to get revenge on the three men who wronged him.
The Count of Monte Cristo was an official selection at the Cannes Film Festival 2024 and is widely expected to sweep the 2025 César Awards.
